The “sudo cat /private/var/log/install.log | open -f” command in the post shouldn’t need sudo.

Good catch! Thanks for the correction. Post updated. :)

The "sudo cat /private/var/log/install.log | open -f" command in the post shouldn't need sudo.

There is also /Library/Receipts/InstallHistory.plist, which contains a complete history of installed packages.

You can use bzip2 -dc (decompress to stdout) to search the archived files:

bzip2 -dc /var/log/install.log.{2..0}.bz2 | grep Installed

You can see what files were installed by a package by using lsbom:

lsbom /var/db/receipts/com.adobe.pkg.FlashPlayer.bom

You can't actually hide files in Terminal. It's just a question of how you list them. In Terminal,

$ ls

will show what you'd see in the Finder. Whereas

$ ls -a

will show all files.

On the other hand, do you mean the Finder always shows your hidden files? If so, then paste this into Terminal to hide them again:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles False; killall Finder
